History Before Sieben: Not much is known about Heisuke’s past in the manga, except that when he was a child, he served under a samurai who abused him sexually, something that left understandable scars in his soul, making him vary of physical contact, especially from Harada Sanosuke, probably because the latter stir emotions in Heisuke he doesn’t even want to voice in his thoughts.
Heisuke is the youngest captain in Shinsengumi, this is a historical fact, and in this manga (which happens to be a yaoi manga) he is portrayed as short, lithe and quite feminine looking with long, sweeping hair that he usually keep tied up in a ponytail. His behavior, however, is everything but feminine, as he is brash, hotheaded and quick to action and more often than not thinks after he’s done something.
Heisuke’s life is far from easy – during the course of the five volume long manga he is raped twice, not counting the abuse he suffered as a child, because of his girlish looks, and he is a member of Shinsengumi, meaning that he lives after their codex, prohibition of the following:
1. Deviating from the samurai code (Bushido)
2. Leaving the Shinsengumi
3. Raising money privately
4. Taking part in others' litigation
5. Engaging in private fights
The penalty for breaking any rule is seppuku, ritual suicide. There are also these regulations within the Shinsengumi:
1. If the leader of a unit is mortally wounded in a fight, all the members of the unit must fight and die on the spot.
2. Even in a fight where the death toll is high, it is not allowed to retrieve the bodies of the dead, except the corpse of the leader of the unit.
In spite of all that, Heisuke really isn’t the type of guy who let things get to him, and he manages to bounce back quite easily from the greater traumas he suffers. All in all, he’s quite the carefree character, without being shallow or uninteresting.
